Subsidiary Tasks

Our subsidiary tasks consist of making a music magazine cover and a music DVD cover to promote our artist and our music video. We are begininng by researching into already existing DVD covers and Music magazines and are planning out how we want ours to look.

Here is my analysis of a music DVD cover as a part of my research for when my group and I make our own music DVD cover for one of our subsidiary task.

In our AS Level we made a magazine under a new hybrid genre, that being Japop, a mixture or combination of jazz and pop. We feel that this genre is continuing, throughout the A2 level of our course due to our song choice, the costumes and outfits and the storyline of our music video.  L.O.V.E. by Nat King Cole was originally a Jazz song; however, with the changes of lyrics that we have made and the changes in tempo and instrument, it now has a Pop vibe about it. So the combination of the new lyrics with the original name and tune of the song it now could be conceived as a Japop song.  So for our promotional subsidiary task of a magazine we have used the template of our Japop magazine from our AS level to properly fit in with the genre of our song choice. Our magazine contains the codes and conventions of our Japop hybrid genre, for example the mixture of dark sophisticated colours to represent Jazz and the lighter colours and pastels to represent the Pop in the hybrid. We have also tempted to use the Japop codes and conventions to create our DVD cover.

We have taken photographs of the characters in our music video and of our performer Jane Wesley, the images which are to be featured upon the magazine and the DVD cover. We are now trying to decide which of the images to use. We have quite a few images to choose from with a multitued of poses, as we have tried to get a variety.

Our idea for the music video would be to feature an open hand on top of the images we have, which would be in the background, as if symbolising a person who is grasping for something or someone who isn’t there, which shows the loss experienced by the main character.

We have had a different idea to the one previously for what can be featured upon the DVD cover and rather than portraying an open hand we have instead decided just to portray a collage, a timeline of events in chronological order of the occurrences of our music video. For example, starting with an image of our main character and her first boyfriend and how we can see via the pictures that their relationship is coming to an end, and then our main character with her new boyfriend and  how she is happy now. We are thinking about having all of the images in black and white, but have not decided for definite.

We have now decided that we are not going to have all of the images in black and white, but instead we are going portray the first image in black and white, but after that have the images gradually gaining a little more saturation until the last image,  where it will be in full colour. This showing how the events being portrayed in the images start in the past and become more and more recent. Until the present day in the last image which is in full colour.

We are adding text, such as the title of the song and artist, and the extras featured upon the DVD, these are being featured while we are trying to be conscientious of how the colours and extra features can be likened to Japop.

Presently we are working to complete our magazine cover and finish our music DVD cover. We are trying to decide the different articles and images to be featured upon the magazine and we are also deciding the fonts to be used upon the DVD cover.

We have now completed the music DVD and the music magazine, we are pleased with how they have turned out. We are happy as we feel that we have included all of the necessary codes and conventions as well making them both appear attractive.
